SENIOR ART COLLOQUIUM
At King, the art major program has three levels of classes: Art 1, Art 2, and Art 3. Each year, the seniors in Art 3 have the freedom to create their own projects with a theme in mind (like, for example, women's rights or dreams). The students then present their work to the school at the end of the year.
My Theme:
OPTICAL ILLUSIONS
Art is beautiful because it inspires. The goal of my artwork is to create immersive experiences that fool the eye and stimulate the viewer’s curiosity. The optical illusions add a magical quality to each piece by actualizing unbelievable concepts – like the idea that a still image can appear to move or that an image can be both an iris and a cityscape– creating experiences that can only exist in art or in dreams. By dwelling for a moment in the magic and impossibility of the pieces, the viewer is not only experiencing wonder, but he or she is also given the opportunity to depart from reality and imagine without limits.
Below are some pictures and videos of my work from this year that include images of people interacting with each piece. I have four pieces: Moiré Ballet, Cascade, Witness, and Deconstructed. Moiré Ballet is a series of acetate sculptures that play off of the moiré pattern illusion. The next piece, Cascade, creates the illusion of movement, and Witness is an anamorphic image of New York City embedded into a picture of an eye. Lastly, Deconstructed is an anamorphic sculpture of a butterfly and is made with blue crystals. My work, and the work of the other advanced art students at King, will be displayed in the performing arts center at King from April to mid-May.
